First Firefighter Death on 11 Sept. 2001
The first Firefighter death on 11 Sept. 2001 was Danny Suhr of FDNY Engine Co. 216 (pictured left). The men of 216 were some of the first responders to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and were setting up near the south tower when a jumper (body) came spiraling from an upper floor of the WTC hit close to him and killed him.
Mychal Judge (a F.D.N.Y. Chaplain) stayed with Danny Suhr and read him his final rights until Tower 2 collapsed and killed both of them.
Amount of Equipment Lost
F.D.N.Y. lost a total of 98 Fire Trucks from the incident as well as almost everything out of the trucks as there were taken and were being used by the firefighters.
Oldest Firefighter to die at the WTC on 11 Sept. 2001
William Feehan pictured to the left was the oldest Firefighter to die at the WTC on 11 Sept. 2001. This 71 year old was a legend for his 42 year Firefighting career and because he has held every rank in the F.D.N.Y. from Probationary Firefighter to first deputy fire commissioner. Before his death, he was said to know the placement of every hydrant in the city.
